Economy watch

One senior officer of the Ministry of Environment and Forests remorsefully accepted that generation of electricity was imposing huge environmental costs on the country. Carbon emissions from thermal plants were adding to global warming. Storage of radioactive waste from nuclear plants was creating a long term hazard. Submergence of forests and breaking of rivers for hydro projects was killing the civilizational ethos of the country. But, the well-meaning officer said, we had to bear these costs in order to provide electricity to the dark households. "Do you know," he asked, "that villages are provided with barely few hours of electric supply in a day in Bihar?" The Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme has set the objective of providing electricity to the 408 lac unelectrified households. Of these 56 lac households had been provided electric connections till February 2009. Generation of electricity has to be increased to meet this basic need of the remaining households. This resolve of the government is wholly welcome. But we must also examine how much electricity is required for this purpose? Might it be that darkness of the households is the smokescreen behind which ever increasing supply is being made to the upper sections of the society? The Government proposes to supply a lifeline consumption of 30 units per month to the presently unelectrified 408 lac households. The requirement of electricity for meeting this objective is 122 crore units per month. The generation of electricity in the country is about 6,000 crore units per month. Diversion of merely two per cent of the present generation is sufficient to meet this requirement. Look at it another way. The increase in generation of electricity is about 300 crore units per month. It would be sufficient if one-third of the increase in a single month is diverted for rural electrification. This done, rural electrification will make no future claim on increases in generation. The amount of electricity required for rural electrification is truly very small. Darkness in the villages is not due to paucity of electricity.

Nepal has of late been mired in problems and consequently the hearts and minds of the Nepalese have been overshadowed by terrifying clouds of negativity. Hope is the strongest pillar of life. To live without hope is like not living at all. Suspicion and counter suspicion is rife and threatens to tear the country apart. ‘Whatever we do is not enough’ is the general feeling among the Nepalese. For most people, duties towards family and self surpass allegiance to the government and the state. As a result, a large part of the Nepalese workforce continues to migrate out of the country, leading to brain drain. The author, who served as aide-de-camp to King Birendra of Nepal, says that multiparty democracy in Nepal is still "immature, floundering and trying to find its feet. We are only too aware of our rights yet we demand them unmindful of our duties." He wonders that if the civil servants’ union thinks only of its own welfare, if the drivers’ association asserts its rights over those of others, if hotel associations work only for their own good and politicians advocate only their parties’ interests, who is to think of the nation’s well-being!" Over the last 10 years or so, Nepal has been deeply shaken by numerous upheavals. Many political experiments have been carried out with zeal during which the citizens of the country have been able to closely evaluate the performance of various political parties. Nepal has experienced the governments of Nepali Congress, a traditionally democratic party, the United Marxist-Leninist Communist Party, the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, a reformist democratic party and their alliances apart from monarchy. Throughout the rule of the sundry political systems, it has become clear that no government can work effectively without the support of the people. The author points out that in Nepal both political parties and opportunists indulge in power games in the name of the ‘people’ and ‘subjects’. He feels that they "cheaply use the wishes of the people as a medium with which to fulfil their selfish interests, however harmful to the country. They have used the public as nothing more than roses with which to decorate the lapels of their political jackets." Interspersing his political views with his personal contributions the author strikes a positive note by pointing out the unprecedented progress made in different sectors. However, Sakya’s account of growing up in a large Newari joint family in Kathmandu, his higher education in the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, his work with the forest department and his distinguished career as an entrepreneur and hotelier make for not very interesting reading. In 1987, after losing his first wife and daughter to cancer, he overcame personal grief to build Nepal’s first cancer hospital by coming up with an innovative idea of charging a one-paisa tax on every cigarette sold in the country. Here relates how he set up the now iconic Kathmandu guest house in his family’s historic house in Thamal.

About Hindu realigion.

I would like to write something about the oldest religion among the all religions. That is about Hindu religion. In hindu mythology, it is said that this religion has been existing for more than 500 centuries. According to this religion ,Karma and Dharma are two important things. Karma means Duty. It say that one must behave responsible and must do his tasks that are assigned to him, without expecting the result. While performing your tasks you should not cause any inconvenience in any way to anyone. And Dharma means principle. One must follow predetermined principles while performing his Karma. There are so many Dharmas in Hindu religion. That means what is dharma of father, mother, sister, brother, wife, husband, children, etc. And ‘BhagavatGeeta’ is holy book of Hindus. This book contains the preaches of lord Srikrishna. It has total 18 chapters. Each chapter contains slokas. It was said in Sanskrit, the origin of all languages. This religion has some customs and traditions. This religion says that God is everywhere and in everything. That’s why Hindus have many temples and worship various gods. They also worship even the snake thinking that God is there even in deadly poisonous things. Hindus have fear of sin. They believe that if they harm others they will directly sent to Hell after their death. If they help others and live a good life with peace then they will goto Heaven after their death. Hindu religion strongly believes in Rebirth. There is again life after death.
